Local Kotara Arborists

After an arborist in Kotara? We are qualified arborists working across Newcastle and the Hunter, and we have been doing this since 1998.

Kotara is a different job to the inner suburbs. Bigger blocks, real backyards, and plenty of large trees that were planted when the houses went up and are now well over the roofline. Backing onto the Blackbutt Reserve side, you also get tall natives right on the boundary, which is where most of the calls come from.

As arborists, we take care to asses and look after all trees Indiscriminately topping a tree leaves weak regrowth and a bigger problem in a few years.

Common Tree Problems We See And Rectify In Kotara

  • Brush Box: Kotara’s post-war streets have mature Brush Box in both residential gardens and street plantings that have had 60 to 70 years to establish. Surface roots lifting driveways and footpaths are the most common complaint, followed by canopy weight over powerlines and roof structures on properties where the trees haven’t been managed in years. Regular structural pruning by a qualified arborist keeps them safe.
  • Camphor Laurel: Fast-growing, heavy-canopied, and with root systems that cause havoc with paths, pipes, and boundary fences. Camphor Laurel is a Regionally Controlled Weed under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015. On Kotara’s typical suburban block the removal is usually straightforward compared to larger properties.
  • Jacarandas: Mid-century planting trends brought Jacarandas to gardens right across Kotara and they’ve been there ever since. Most are now mature specimens that need periodic deadwood removal and crown lifting to stay safe.
  • Lilly Pillies: Kotara gardens have a lot of established Lilly Pilly hedges and specimens that have grown well beyond their original pruning intent. Hedge trimming and structural shaping keeps them functional. The ones that have been left to grow for 20 years without attention are a bigger job.
  • Cocos Palms: Planted enthusiastically across Kotara’s suburban gardens from the 1970s onward and now thoroughly overstayed their welcome on most properties. We section them down carefully on suburban blocks where there’s no room to fell.
  • Pittosporums; Appear regularly along Kotara fence lines and in neglected garden corners. Left unchecked they self-seed and spread — removal before seed set is the sensible approach.

Waratah Professional Tree Care has trimmed our massive Iron Bark tree a number of times - last week being the latest. Steven is nothing short of amazing as he navigates up and down, from limb to limb, trimming off branches which are bigger than most trees. He and his crew are fantastic - left our tree with a great new "hair cut" which will keep it safe and left the yard tidier than it was when they arrived. Highly reccommend!

Waratah Professional Tree Care has been pruning my trees for some years now and always do a great job. This time around I had two rogue trees at the front of my home which needed to be removed. The quote was a fair one and it all went ahead. I am simply in awe of this team,as I watched some of the time. They know exactly what they are doing and they do it well. They kept me informed on everything and were very respectful. Safety was an issue, as one tree was very big. They managed it all very well. After all that, they trimmed my grass, tidied up - and my front lawn looked the best it has been in some time. I was advised as to what would happen in regard to the Tree stump. The team came one week after and sorted that out. I would recommend this team to anyone. In fact, they will be doing more work for me soon!

Arborist FAQS In Kotara

Find answers to common questions about our tree care services, safety procedures, and what to expect when working with our qualified arborists.

Kotara is in the Lake Macquarie City Council local government area, which has its own tree preservation provisions separate from Newcastle City Council. Significant trees on private property may require approval before removal or major pruning. The species, size, and location of the tree all affect whether a permit is needed. Check with Lake Macquarie City Council before any work begins https://www.lakemac.nsw.gov.au/, or ask us during an onsite assessment — we’ll advise on what we know before touching anything.

Street trees and trees on public land in Kotara are Lake Macquarie City Council’s responsibility. If a council tree is overhanging your property, showing signs of structural failure, or causing damage to infrastructure, contact council’s tree management team. If a council tree causes damage to your private property, document it thoroughly and seek advice on whether you have a claim.

Cocos Palm removal is generally more involved than people expect due to the density of the trunk, which needs to be sectioned rather than felled on most suburban blocks. Cost depends on the height of the palm, access to the site, and proximity to fences and structures. We provide free quotes — send us a photo and we’ll give you a straight answer.

For most established suburban trees, an arborist assessment every 3 to 5 years is sensible risk management. Trees near structures, powerlines, or with known health issues warrant more regular attention. The trees that cause the most damage in storms are almost always the ones that haven’t been looked at in a decade — by the time something fails, the warning signs were usually there well beforehand.
