Signs a Tree Is Dangerous

A tree can become dangerous after a storm, or slowly over years as it decays. Have the tree looked at by an arborist if you notice:

a tree that has suddenly started leaning or listing
large limbs that are split, cracked or hanging in the canopy
cracks in the trunk or in a major branch
roots that have lifted, or soil that has cracked around the base
damage from lightning, wind or flooding
decay, hollows or fungal growth on the trunk or at the base
a tree growing too close to the house, the road or powerlines

If you are not sure whether the tree is safe, keep people and cars out from under it until an arborist has looked at it.

What Happens to a Tree After a Storm

Severe weather can split a tree, partly uproot it or leave it leaning, and some of that damage is hard to judge from the ground. We look at the whole tree: the canopy, the trunk, the roots and the ground around it. Then we explain what we recommend and why, whether that is removal, pruning, treatment or keeping an eye on the tree.

Do You Need Council Approval to Remove a Storm Damaged Tree in Newcastle?

City of Newcastle allows a tree on private land to be removed without a permit, with the landowner’s consent, when the tree has been suddenly damaged by a storm or strong winds and poses an immediate risk to life or property. Council asks you to follow its Urban Forest Technical Manual and to submit the Storm Damaged Tree Removal Form within 5 days of the removal.

A dead or storm damaged tree can also be removed without approval, unless it is a habitat tree, sits on heritage-listed land, sits in a heritage conservation area and is visible from the street or a public space, or is part of an Aboriginal object or place of heritage significance. If the damage is not an immediate risk, or the tree sits on protected land, check City of Newcastle’s private tree removal rules before the tree comes down. Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens councils each set their own rules, so check with your own council if you live outside Newcastle.
