Local Arborists Working Across Lambton

Coastal block with established trees that need careful work?
Old gums towering over your home?
Roots from a fig tree threatening your driveway?

Merewether’s coastal location and older streetscape mean a lot of mature trees, and a lot of homes that need careful, qualified tree work close to structures, fences, and neighbouring properties.
Waratah Professional Tree Care has been working across Merewether and Newcastle since 1998. That’s over 27 years caring for trees and protecting properties across the region.

Tree Services We Provide in Merewether

If You’re Building or Renovating in Merewether

Merewether has seen significant development activity over the past decade. New builds replacing older homes, extensions and second storeys being added, pools going in on blocks that already have established trees. Every one of those projects has tree implications that are worth understanding before the builder arrives.

Root systems don’t respect building footprints. A large Eucalypt or Brush Box can have roots extending well beyond the canopy drip line, and construction activity that disturbs those roots, compacts the soil above them, or cuts through them can cause tree decline that doesn’t become visible until 18 months after the work is done. By which point the builder is long gone.

We carry out pre-construction tree assessments that document the tree’s condition, map the likely root zone, and give the builder and owner a clear picture of what can and can’t happen near each tree.
It’s a small investment that prevents a much larger problem.

Our Arborist Process

We follow a structured, safety-focused process to ensure every tree removal is completed efficiently and responsibly.

1

Site Assessment

We evaluate the tree’s health, stability, and location — including access, nearby buildings, and fall zones.

2

Risk Management

Hazards are identified and controlled before work begins, using qualified climbers and certified gear.

3

Safe Removal

Trees are removed in stages using ropes and rigging to lower each limb safely. Nothing is left to chance.

4

Clean-Up

All debris is mulched or removed, leaving your yard clear, safe, and damage-free.

If You’re Concerned About a View

View management is a sensitive topic and we approach it carefully. NSW law does not give you a general right to a view. A neighbour’s tree growing and gradually obscuring your outlook is not something you can demand to be recified.
That said, there are legitimate pathways. The Trees Act 2006 does allow applications where a hedge, defined as two or more trees or shrubs planted in a line over 2.5 metres, is severely affecting your enjoyment of your property. And in some cases, planning conditions on coastal and elevated properties do restrict vegetation heights.

What we can do is assess the trees in question, advise on what the options are, and carry out any agreed pruning work.
What we won’t do is recommend removing a healthy tree simply to improve a view, that’s not arborist practice and it’s not something we’d be comfortable with.

Areas We Service in Merewether & Surrounds

We provide arborist services throughout Merewether and nearby suburbs including: Merewether Heights, Bar Beach, The Junction, Cooks Hill, The Hill, Hamilton South, Adamstown, Adamstown Heights, Dudley, Redhead, and surrounding areas.

If you’re on a property bordering the park or in the immediate surrounding streets and you have questions about what you can and can’t do with your trees, we can help you understand the process.
We’ll give you an honest assessment of what’s needed and what approvals may apply before any work starts.

Trees We Commonly Work With In Merewether

  • Spotted Gums (Corymbia maculata) are magnificent trees and very common on Merewether Heights properties. They’re generally structurally sound but they drop bark and branches naturally — that’s normal eucalypt behaviour, not necessarily a sign of ill health. The question is always about positioning: a Spotted Gum in the middle of a large garden is very different to one overhanging a roof or a pool. We had a notable case recently with a Spotted Gum in nearby Adamstown Heights that had been struck by lightning — the internal damage wasn’t apparent until the tree had been declining for months. • Norfolk Island Pines are iconic along the Merewether foreshore and appear on a number of residential properties in the suburb. They’re generally tough trees but older specimens can develop significant deadwood, and their height makes any work a specialist job. Not every arborist is set up for the height and access challenges of a large Norfolk Island Pine — we are.
  • Brush Box on the larger Merewether Heights blocks can reach significant size. Surface root activity, canopy weight over structures, and the challenge of managing a tree that wants to be 20 metres tall on a suburban block are all common themes. Structural pruning done well can extend the life of these trees on residential properties considerably.
  • Coastal Banksias and Angophoras appear on properties closer to the beach and along the foreshore areas. Coastal Angophoras in particular are spectacular trees — twisted, irregular form, extraordinary character — but their structural complexity means any pruning needs to be done with a genuine understanding of how the tree distributes load. They don’t respond well to indiscriminate cutting.
  • Port Jackson Figs turn up on some of the older Merewether properties. Beautiful trees with an extraordinary root system. If one is near any structure — pool, retaining wall, house — it needs proper assessment. The roots of a mature Port Jackson Fig are not to be underestimated.
