Common Tree Problems And Work in Waratah

The older parts of Waratah are full of gums, camphor laurels, jacarandas and figs, plus a lot of privet and palms that were planted decades ago and are now well beyond their spot.

  • Privet: Two varieties turn up regularly in Waratah , broadleaf privet (Ligustrum lucidum) and narrowleaf privet (Ligustrum sinense). Both are Regionally Controlled Weeds under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015, and both are notorious hay fever triggers during flowering season. They self-seed prolifically, spread into neighbouring properties, and left unchecked will take over a garden remarkably fast. We remove them where possible and recommend doing so before they set seed.
  • Eucalypts: The gums in older Waratah gardens are often large, established specimens that have been there for decades. The main concern is limb drop, eucalypts shed branches naturally as part of their growth cycle, but over a roof, driveway, or fence line that becomes a real risk. A structural assessment and targeted deadwood removal can significantly reduce that risk without touching the tree’s overall form or health.
  • Camphor Laurel: Fast-growing, heavy-canopied, and with a root system that treats paths, driveways, and underground pipes as suggestions rather than obstacles. Camphor Laurel is also a Regionally Controlled Weed under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015, its berries are spread by birds, which is how it turns up in gardens where nobody planted it. It is one of the most common trees we remove.
  • Jacarandas: One of the most loved trees in Newcastle’s older suburbs — and one of the most regularly neglected. Mature Jacarandas develop significant deadwood and their lower canopy tends to creep toward whatever is nearby, roofs and gutters included. A crown lift and deadwood removal every few years keeps them safe and looking their best. Lopping them, which some operators do, creates structural problems and ugly regrowth that takes years to recover.
  • Figs: Ornamental figs on older Waratah properties are charming until the root system becomes a problem, which it inevitably does. Fig roots are aggressive surface feeders that lift concrete, crack paving, and find their way into stormwater lines. On a small suburban block with hard surfaces nearby, a mature fig needs regular monitoring. Removal is often the more practical long-term answer on tighter blocks.
  • Palms: Cocos Palms are the most common in Waratah’s older gardens — planted for their tropical look and now well past their welcome on most properties. The fronds drop constantly, the seed heads attract fruit bats, and the trunk density makes removal more involved than it looks. We section them down carefully rather than felling, on a suburban block there’s rarely room to do it any other way.

Waratah Professional Tree Care has trimmed our massive Iron Bark tree a number of times - last week being the latest. Steven is nothing short of amazing as he navigates up and down, from limb to limb, trimming off branches which are bigger than most trees. Waratah Professional Tree Care  has been pruning my trees for some years now and always do a great job. This time around I had two rogue trees at the front of my home which needed to be removed. The quote was a fair one and it all went ahead. I am simply in awe of this team,as I watched some of the time. They know exactly what they are doing and they do it well. They kept me informed on everything and were very respectful. Safety was an issue,  as one tree was very big. They managed it all very well. After all that, they trimmed my grass, tidied up - and my front lawn looked the best it has been in some time. I was advised as to what would happen in regard to the Tree stump.
